How fitting, that the final section of this letter from Paul the apostle to his protégé Timothy, concludes with Paul’s own example of the charge he has given Timothy to endure and guard the gospel, even through suffering and persecution! - 2 Timothy 4:9-22

Paul’s predicament during his time in prison, while writing this letter to Timothy, is outlined in these 14 verses, and gives us an insight into Paul’s situation. Each ‘circumstance’ describes Paul’s example of endurance through suffering, and also gives Timothy a personal note.

Verses 9-13: He was deserted. Paul mentions those who had deserted him, either through physical presence or by turning away from the faith. Paul requests for Timothy to come to him. Likewise, we should also be ready to support our brothers and sisters who are suffering for the sake of the gospel.

Verses 14-15: He was opposed. Paul warns Timothy to be alert for Alexander, and such people who seek to oppose the message of the gospel. Paul also reminds Timothy of God’s final judgement as a means to encourage Timothy to endure. Likewise, we need to be alert for those who will outwardly oppose the gospel message. We also need to remember that God is the final judge: we as God’s people already have victory; and God will ultimately judge those who oppose the truth.

Verse 16 – 18: He was unsupported. Paul tells of his seemingly lonely situation, but tells of his great trust, knowing that God was with Him and gave Paul strength to endure and continue to share the gospel message. Paul also recounts his assurance of the future in the heavenly kingdom.

Paul faced true persecution, yet he endured and suffered faithfully for the gospel of Jesus Christ, and continued to tell of his hope in Jesus through these times! I recently read a quote which went along the lines of “Suffering is a sure companion on every Christian’s journey.” As we read of Paul’s example of his suffering, we are compelled today to tell others about the hope found in Jesus Christ our saviour, and endure whatever persecutions and sufferings come our way. We are blessed and privileged to live in a society where we are free to tell others about Jesus without much opposition. Yet it seems that we are not making the most of the opportunity that the Lord has given us. I pray that we will all be challenged to step out of our comfort zone in order to share with someone about the hope that Jesus brings in this seemingly hopeless world, even if it means suffering. I pray that we will endure suffering in this world, for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.
