Worship Service Essentials
"Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name." Psalm 100:4
These days, "worship" is sometimes thought of as a style of music. Worship is far more than that!! When we come together, every part of our church service is an act of worship. In our services there are many facets.
- praying
- Scripture reading
- singing
- music
- communion
- silence and being reflective
- listening to a speaker or sermon
- baptism
- greeting each other
- morning tea or supper
We believe that worship is even more than meeting together for a worship service. Worship is a way of life, of enjoying God, and giving ourselves to him each day to be used for his purposes. When you use your life for God's glory, everything you do can become an act of worship.
"So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."1 Cor 10:31
"Give yourselves to God . . . Surrender your whole being to him to be used for righteous purposes." Rom 6:13
When we come together, our worship is for God's benefit. When we worship God, our goal is to bring pleasure to Him (not ourselves). If you leave a service thinking, "I didn't get much out of that," then you've got the wrong idea. We worship not for our own sake - but to honour our Creator - and we do not only worship at church - our lives are an offering of worship every day.
It has been said that the heart of worship is surrender. In our society we prefer to think of achieving and winning than surrender and obeying. But surrendering to God is what he wants and it is our natural response to his love and mercy. We give ourselves to God in worship not primarily out of fear or duty, but in love because "he first loved us".
We all reflect God's glory - in different ways. God made us all different and we each praise him in our unique and beautiful ways. He didn't make us as robots to serve him and he doesn't ask us to repress our personalities and conform to one style of worship. He made us with different personalities because he likes us that way and knows that we all have something special to offer.
Some people like to dance and clap, others like to close their eyes and reflect on God's Honour. You are welcome to join in our worship in whatever way you feel comfortable as long as it is "done in a fitting and orderly way" (1 Cor 14:40)
So, in our worship services you will see many people praising God in all different ways. As long as it is orderly and done with a desire to honour God, we know that He is pleased.
